MMLA is a “Team Nutrition School”
The Mid-Michigan Leadership Academy is among a small handful of schools in Michigan who received a Youth Wellness Mini-Grant. We formed an Action Team consisting of administration, teachers and students who developed an Action Plan to help our school create a healthy school environment using Michigan Nutrition Standards.
Each month a special event will be held to bring attention to the value of healthy eating and activities:
In January, our middle school students will sample pizzas with whole wheat crusts and pineapple.
In February, Mrs. Poor will facilitate an “after school cooking club” for grades 1 -4 where they will learn to make healthy wraps.
Our goal for March is to coordinate a synchronized dance school wide for the morning meeting and sample a variety of breads.
In April, we will offer recipes and samples of smoothies to parents who attend parent teacher conferences. Parents who participate will also be entered into a drawing to win a blender to make the smoothies at home!
In May, we will celebrate Spring with Salads.
Black History Month Celebration
The MMLA Black History Month Assembly will be held on Friday, February 26, 2010 at 1:30 pm in our gymnasium. Everyone is welcome. Each grade will offer a presentation on black history, through music, dance, art and orations.
American Reading Idol
March is National Reading Month. At MMLA, we celebrate with a month long competition of reading called “The American Reading Idol.” This competition is unique to MMLA in which students compete by reading to other classrooms. Participants are judged on a variety of criteria including pronunciation, fluency and poise. Schuler Books & Music is proud to sponsor this event for the 5th consecutive year. Jason Colthorp of WILX - TV will host the finals on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 1:30 pm in our gymnasium. There will be 6 competitors with 2 finalists in each age group: K-2, 3-5 & 6-8.
Lansing Symphony Orchestra
presents a
Young People’s Concert
Featuring music from Holst’s
The Planets
The LSO has been introducing orchestral music to young listeners for over 60 years. On March 31, 2010, our students will be among the fourth through sixth graders who will fill the Wharton Center’s Great Hall and learn about the instruments of the orchestra through a narrated concert. The LSO, with Timothy Muffitt conducting, will perform in collaboration with The Greater Lansing Ballet Company under the direction of Barbara Banislowski Smith.
